Figure 11: Afferents to the calyces derive from the protocerebrum as well as from sensory neuropils. In addition to axon collaterals of olfactory projection neurons, other afferents invade the calyces. One is show from the lateral protocerebrum where its dendrites are visited by axons from the optic lobes and antennal lobes. Such protocerebral afferents are multimodal (see Fig. 12), responding to nonolfactory modalities (visual and tactile; see top traces, Fig. 12). Another afferent is shown originating in the dorsal lobes (d lob) and terminating at the tip of the medial lobe (arrow).
