Figure 3: Mushroom body shapes are characteristic of different groups of insects. This figure shows surface rendering of reconstructions of the mushroom bodies of: A. a primitive apterygote, the thysanuran Lepisma sacharina; B. an orthopteran Schistocerca gregaria; C. a worker honey bee, Apis mellifera. The primitive apterygote lacks calyces and also lacks glomerular antennal lobes. However, its mushroom bodies are equipped with vertical (V) and medial (M) lobes. The honey bee has separated paired calyces, like those of more primitive neopteran insects, such as cockroaches.
