Silver stains of Drosphila optic lobes demonstrate the presence of orthogonally arranged dendrites of horizontal and vertical neurons in the lobula plate. Because these are difficult to stain, these same cell types are here exemplified from a larger species of fly. Optical stacks from two consecutive sections of the fly Calliphora erythrocephala show the characteristic arrangement of vertical neurons and the three horizontal neurons in the lobula plate. The lobula is visible through the lobula plate and is characterized by columnar neurons. The axons of these elements converge onto the giant fibre.
