This horizontal section of the optic lobes shows a wide-field terminal invading the lobula plate with branches that also extend to the inner layer of the medulla and the outermost layer of the lobula. These three levels of varicose specializations correspond to important synaptic way-stations of the motion-detector pathway described from larger flies (Phaenicia serricata; Douglass and Strausfeld, 1995, 1996. J. Neurosci 15:5596-5611 and 16:4551-4562).
