Schematic of a central body section. Abbreviation and structures link to a page with relevant information. Section levels link to sagittal, frontal or horizonatal silver sections.

This neuropil complex consists of the protocerebral bridge and its projections to the central body - which comprises the fan-shaped body, superior arch, ellipsoid body, the dorsal and ventral components of the noduli - and satellite neuropils such as the ventral bodies (see 3-D models) and the isthmi. Clicking on the arrowheads will take you to a variety of links pertaining to the mushroom bodies. There are three classes of links. One goes to histological material, such as Golgi, cobalt-silver, or reduced silver material. Others go to material revealed by genetic methods, such as enhancer trap technology. Others go central complex images from a larger dipteran, Calliphora. The links are not in any order. It is intended that the serendipitous use of these links will educated the observer about these structures (see schematic), which may play a crucial role in motor control.
