At this level, axons of antennal lobe projection neurons are clustering into bundles that will eventually collect into one of the antennal glomerular tracts destined for other brain areas. Two of the main tracts are destined for the superior lateral protocerebrum, calyces, and lateral horn. Also at this level, the gamma lobe is clearly visible. Its translucent appearance is due to the number of extremely thin axons of Kenyon cells that are only weakly argyrophilic. The antennal lobes [click here for horizontal view] are separated by the brain's ventral fissure (v.fi). Ascending and descending axons to the frontal ganglion and to regions of the digestive tract extend between the two brain halves via the median bundle (m.bdl). Terminals and dendrites of neurons that contribute to the median bundle extend laterally over the roof of the protocerebrum, some projecting into its inferior medial neuropil.
