The ventrolateral protocerebrum shows two parts, a superior and inferior lobe that differ with respect to their fibrous texture. At this level, the alpha lobes extend anteriorly (with respect to the neuraxis). The root of the lateral inferior antennoglomerular tract (l.i.ant-gl.t) leaves the upper margin of the antennal lobes at X= +/-4 and at Z = -4. The cross section of the mechanosensory strand of the antennal lobe is visible lateral to the antennal lobes. The two antennal lobes are linked by an amorphous bridge of neuropil across the ventral fissure. This bridge carries axons of certain olfactory receptors which originate from each antennal nerve and which send terminal branches into equivalent glomeruli in each lobe. The axons of these receptors are too small to be resolved by the Bodian method. Note also the large axon collaterals extending from the +X ant. op. tu downwards and under the alpha lobe on that side. At this level, the most caudal part of the beta lobe is just visible.
