As in the preceding section (Y= -2.4), the noduli are two ball-shaped neuropils lying under the fan-shaped body which, at this level, shows two lobe-like volumes under a surmounting crescent of neuropil. The stave-like arrangement of thick processes can still be traced through this level and will continue through to Y= -4 where the axons of these neurons cross over after projecting from the protocerebral bridge and before entering the f.b.

At this level the superior medial and superior lateral protocerebra are thrown into discrete subdivisions, connected to other brain areas via tracts. Most of these protocerebral regions have, as yet, not been analyzed with respect to their cellular organization. Some, such as the lateral horn, can be easily matched to named counterparts in the fly, Musca domestica (Strausfeld, NJ [1976] Atlas of an Insect Brain. Springer, Heidelberg, New York). Other regions cannot easily be matched between species at this time.
