In the preceding section, the lateral horn (l.ho) appeared as an amorphous neuropil flanking the superior lateral protocerebrum. Here the l. ho appears to merge with an area of the protocerebrum which, between coordinate X-10 and X-15, at level Z +1 - +5, is indicated by large roughly parallel fibres. Again, this is one of several architectonically discrete regions of the protocerebrum.
At this level, the antenno-glomerular tract flanks the fan-shaped body. The noduli are still visible and the most dorsal and lateral parts of the superior arch, the lateral protuberances (l.pt), flank the fan-shaped body. Neuropil inferior and lateral to the f.b., between levels Z 0 and Z-5, comprise mechanosensory and visual neuropils of the lateral deutocerebrum. Again, this gross division is subdivided into many discrete regions, each characterized by its own cytoarchitectonics. Names given to neuropils and tracts are the "best match" between the Drosophila brain and that described from the housefly,Musca domestica.
