Heterolateral connections - connecting regions each side of the midline -can be observed at almost every level along the Y-axis. However, behind (i.e. dorsal, with respect to the neuraxis) the level of the fan-shaped body, there appear the largest and most extensive heterolateral pathways, many ascribed to visual interneurons.
The giant interneuron commissure of the giant fibre pathway (g.i.co.g.f.pa) originates at the giant fibres (g.f) to project heterolaterally beneath the central body complex. Axons linking the fan-shaped body to the protocerebral bridge are clustered together at this level, at level Z= +2.5, either side of the midline, at +/- X=1.
