Neuropil flanking the oesophagous, at Z= -8, X= +/-5-10, is linked by several large commissures, one of which is shown here. The neuropil itself belongs to the inferior lateral deutocerebrum (inf. l. deut), contiguous with the deutocerebrum's most ventral region, the antennal lobes, and corresponding to Sanchez's vertical lobe (mechanosensory neuropil). Above the oesophagous, several large heterolateral tracts link medio-lateral deutocerebrum supplied by projection neurons from the lobula whose axonal cross sections can be seen here.
The chiasma-like projections of axons between the protocerebral bridge (Y= -6) and the fan-shaped body (Y= -3) are clearly visible at this level and are flanked laterally by the antennal-glomerular tract. Its projection into the lateral horn (l.ho) can be seen in the next section. At the present level, the lateral horn is architecturally distinct from other protocerebral neuropils.
A prominent bundle of axons can be seen projecting beneath the ant-gl.t. towards the position that will be assumed by the pr.br. in the next section. This tract can be followed around the upper edge of the pedunculus, after which its fibres distribute into the protocerebrum. Although there is no equivalent tract in Musca at this level, its pathway is reminiscent of the commissure of the lateral horn (com.l.ho), and is given the same name here.
