This level illustrates the cross section of the posterior optic tract (p. op. t) which originates ventrally from the leading edge of the medulla and which carries heterolateral axons of tangential cells between the left and right medulla neuropils. The lobula (lo) is shown with some of its wide-field elements against the generally retinotopic organization of columnar neurons.
Tracts from the lobula invade the lateral deutocerebrum, and some fibres ascend into the remnant of the inferior lateral protocerebrum. More deeply, beneath X=0, heterolateral tracts link lateral deutocerebral neuropils.
At this level, the calyces appear isolated from the rest of the neuropil.
