At this level, what is now the medial and dorso-lateral deutocerebrum mainly receives inputs from the lobula plate (not visible here, but go to lateral view) and from neurons that are shared by lobula and the lobula plate. Also, this is the level at which the ocellar nerve axons distribute to a variety of targets in the deutocerebrum where they converge with lobula plate outputs onto descending neurons that are associated with visual guidance during flight.
Above the oesophagous, the brain is represented by the lateral neuropils of the deutocerebrum and a small bridge of axons over the oesophagous. This mainly consists of axons of the posterior optic tract (p. op. t). The connection between this segment of the tract and more lateral fibres can be seen in section Y= -10.2.
