At this level beneath the retina (ret) of the compound eye, the lamina neuropil is shown with the cross sections of the L1 and L2 monopolar cell axons denoting the mosaic of optic cartridges - the retinotopically organized synaptic subunits in which photoreceptor axons synapse with 1st order interneurons.
