This level shows the three fused suboesophageal ganglia (from frontal to caudal these are the mandibular, maxillary, and labial ganglia), the neuropils of which are contiguous across the mid-line. Despite their fusion, their segmental origins are suggested by dense and lobulate neuropils that are connected by a sequence of heterolateral commissures. From anterior to posterior the commissures are: the 1st and 2nd mandibular commissures (man. c. 1, 2); the maxillary fascicle (max. c) and the labial fascicle (lab. c). The roots of the maxillary and labial nerves are indicated as max. n and lab. n. These are usually refered to in Drosophila as labrofrontal and labial nerves, respectively. At this level the oesophagous (oes) is shown in cross section as it extends vertically. The inner edge of the optic lobe's medulla (me) is visible at each side of the image.
