A lateral tributary of the antennal nerve (v. trib. ant. n) enters the suboesophageal ganglion to distribute large fibres that contribute to fascicles shown here and in the preceding section (superior maxillary fascicle: s. max. fasc). Neurobiotin fills of the head hairs of larger flies (Sarcophaga carnaria) demonstrate that these fascicles represent head hair fields, the axons from which enter the antennal nerve at its point of entry into the brain. At this level, anterior neuropil forms the mandibular lobes (man. lob) which are contiguous across the mid-line. The labial ganglion's lobes (lab. lob) are connected to the mandibular lobes by the horizontal fascicle (man-lab. fasc).
