A lateral strand of the median bundle extends to the tritocerebrum (tritocerebral strand of the m.bdl.; tr. str. m. bdl) carrying axons of interneurons arising from the roof of the superior medial protocerebrum down to the tritocerebrum. The antennal lobe glomeruli all exhibit the punctuate appearance of projection neuron dendrites.

At this level, six commissures extend under the oesophagous to connect neuropils lateral to it. The most caudal of these is the paired posterior suboesophageal commissure (p. su. oes. c) connecting lateral strands of the ventral nerve cord. This is preceded by three sets of commissures segmentally ascribed to the labial and maxillary segments of the suboesophageal ganglion (minor lab/max su.oes. c).

Laterally, the leading edge of the medulla (me) is seen giving rise to axons that form the posterior optic tract connecting the left and right optic lobes.
