The mushroom body
-lobes (mb.
) are enclosed by neuropil of the superior
medial protocerebrum which itself is linked to lateral and more dorsal
protocerebral areas by the oblique protocerebral fascicle (o. pr. fasc).
Dorsally, at the level of the lateral horn, the roots of the commissure of
the lateral horn (see next section) merge with the posterior lateral
fascicle (p. l. fasc) which links the lateral horn to the inferior lateral
protocerebrum.
The pedunculus of the mushroom body (mb. ped) reveals its several subdivisions. These can be visualized by mass staining using Golgi impregnations and by expression patterns in enhancer trap lines.
