At this level, the ipsilateral strand of the median bundle is visible as a cross-section (m bdl) immediately in front of the lateral ellipsoid tract (l e t) and antennal lobe tract (ant lob t). The latter carries olfactory receptor axons that supply the antennal lobes heterolaterally. The tips of the mushroom body's medial lobes lie beneath the superior frontal protocerebrum. Like the superior medial protocerebrum above it, this region comprises several discrete neuropils; their functions are unknown. The oblique tract running from the protocerebral bridge to beneath the fan-shaped body is here given the neutral term "oblique medial tract" (ob m t). Possibly it provides connections to or from the protocerebral bridge, but this is unclear. Other abbreviations: gc, great commissure; oc n, ocellar nerve; sog, subesophageal ganglion.
