The divisions of the mushroom body's medial lobe are narrower at this level than they are medially. Occasionally, large diameter axons (one arrowed in red) are seen within the matrix of the medial lobe. These belong to efferent neurons (see Ito et al., 1998). The mushroom body's vertical lobe also originates at this level. The central complex neuropils, which are no longer in view at this level, are flanked by many circumscribed areas of "diffuse" neuropil that make up the inferior postero-medial protocerebrum (i p-m pr). As the viewer proceeds further laterally, this region will appear even more subdivided into discrete "nuceli" or "foci". Already, the back part of the brain in the posterior slope (p sl) shows delineations into glomerular foci that receive the terminals of small-field efferent neurons from the optic lobe's lobula complex. A broad fascicle links the p sl with the ventral bodies (v bo) and inferior protocerebrum (pr- p sl fasc).
Also shown at this level are profiles of dendritic processes that belong to the giant fiber [(g f) a.k.a. giant descending neuron]. Intermingling with its processes are other large descending neuron branches and fibers of the protocerebral-posterior slope fascicle (pr-p sl fasc).
