Although not visible as two entities, the vertical lobe receives two distinct subsets of Kenyon cell axons that make up a core and shell of fibers called, respectively, the a and a' divisions. These comprise axon collaterals of axons that supply, respectively, b and b'. However, while most Kenyon cells that supply the g division of the medial lobe do not have collaterals, a small subset of them do.
At this level, the inner antennocerebral tract bends laterally to pass in front of the calyx (ca). Deeper in the brain, the great commissure is shown outlined in red. Its composition of many large diameter axons can be clearly seen. Neuropil flanking the esophagus belongs to the tritocerebrum. It is linked to the medial protocerebrum by the tritocerebral lateral deutocerebral tract (trito l deu t).
