The lateral optic tract (l op t) is shown entering the anterior optic tubercle (a op tu). Also shown are the lobula roots of the giant commissure (lo r g c). The lobula complex is here shown consisting of the lobula and a smaller plate of neuropil, the lobula plate (lo p). These together comprise the third optic neuropils of the "lobula complex." The second optic neuropil is the medulla (me). Note the difference of fiber architecture between the medulla and lobula. The former has as many columns as there are facets of the compound eye. The lobula is composed of larger columnar cells, the spacing of which is equivalent to one to every six medulla columns.
