Bundles of axons connecting the lamina and medulla comprise the first optic chiasma (op 1). Many small perikarya lie between the bundles. These are the cell bodies of medulla interneurons (c b me n), which contribute to the columnar organization of this region. Cell bodies of monopolar cells (c b mo c) reside as groups above the optic cartridges, between the lamina and the basement membrane of the retina.
