The late embryonic NB 5-2 lineage contains 17 to 26 cells in the ventral to ventrolateral cortex. Most of the cells are contralaterally projecting interneurons. One fibre projects along the anterior border (5-2Ica1) and 2-3 axons traverse along the posterior border of the anterior commissure (5-2Ica2). A prominent fascicle runs through the posterior commissure (5-2Icp). In all clones one fibre of this fascicle ends near or inside the anterior root of the intersegmental nerve. In some of the oldest embryos observed the fibre leaves the CNS to reach muscle VL2. Thus, this fibre presumably represents a motoneuronal projection (5-2M) that develops rather late (late stage 16/early stage 17). At stage 16 all progeny of NB5-2 express the gooseberry-proximal protein at different intensities (see also Buenzow and Holmgren, 1995).
