Summary of the Segmental Organization
of the Embryonic Drosophila Brain

Simplified schematic summary diagram showing that the Drosophila embryonic brain consists of three neuromeres, b1, b2, and b3. Posterior borders of each of these neuromeres are marked with stripes of en-expressing cells. The two parts of neuromere b1 are interconnected by the preoral embryonic brain commissure, which is formed just anterior to the en-b1 stripe. The two parts of neuromere b3 are interconnected by the tritocerebral commissure, which is formed just anterior to the en-b3 stripe. The three brain neuromeres are connected by longitudinal axon tracts and connectives that extend further posteriorly to the subesophageal ganglion. In otd mutant brains, the neuromere b1, including the preoral brain commissure, is missing or severly deranged, whereas in ems mutant brains, neuromeres b2 and b3 are missing or severly deranged
