Camera lucida drawings of receptor cell axons and of all columnar neurons connecting the lamina with the medulla. The composite picture represents the view of a horizontal section at the level of the Cuccatti bundle. The tangentially oriented continuous lines in the medulla demarkate the 10 apparent layers into which this neuropil has been subdivided. The stippled line tentatively subdivides layer 6 further. Please note that the longer variants of R7 and R8 respectively are rare observations. A more detailed description of these neuronal phenotypes is found in Fischbach and Dittrich (1989) from where this picture is slightly modified.
