By use of the Gal4/UAS-system (Brand and Perrimon, 1993) the chicken axonal surface protein DM-GRASP/BEN/SC1 (Pourquie et al., 1992) can be expressed in Drosophila. A BEN encoding cDNA was cloned behind UAS recognition sites for GAL4 and used for transformation of Drosophila melanogaster. Several independent transformants containing the BEN encoding vector were obtained. When crossed to Gal4 enhancer trap lines (provided by Gerhard Technau and Jochen Urban, Mainz), BEN expression can be visualized on cell body fibers and axons using anti-BEN antibodies.
