We have used the P[Gal4] enhancer-trapping technique to identify genes expressed in the adult olfactory system of Drosophila. Among the enhancer-trap lines with P[Gal4] expression pattern in the antennal lobe and antennal neurons, the line C133 specifies distinctive neuronal lineage in the antennal lobes through larval development to adulthood. It also stains the antennal glomeruli tract connecting the antennal lobe to the mushroom body. The P[Gal4] is inserted in a gene with elevated expression of 1.5kb mRNA in the adult head. The C-terminus part of the deduced protein sequence shows significant homology to phospholipase A2 sequence from bees and lizard, suggesting that the putative protein might be with phospholipase A2 activity. Preliminary test result indicates olfactory defects in homozygote C133 flies.
